Arsis Duo

Concert / Prize of the 2nd Braga International Chamber Music Competition with Guitar (2018)

Duo Arsis is a guitar duet founded in December 2016. It is composed by Nuno Jesus (Portalegre) and João Robim (V. N. Famalicão), who started the project at the University of Évora. Both received several prizes in national and international competitions, and they decided to approach the repertoire notoriously more virtuoso for two guitars, namely the works of Joaquin Rodrigo, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Fernando Sor or Johann Sebastian Bach.

It is also an objective of the group to explore some of the less played works of the repertoire, and compositions have already been presented by Oskar Sigmund, Johann Kaspar Mertz and Tiago Quintas (absolute debut). They are also  preparing a concert repertoire that will be presented with orchestra.

During 2017 and 2018, there were several public performances from north to south of the country, and the Duo was awarded in national and international competitions, such as the 3rd National Music Contest “Gilberta Paiva” in Santa Maria da Feira, and the 2nd International Chamber Music with Guitar Competition in Braga, being praised by internationally renowned musicians such as Tilman Hoppstock, Fabio Zanon and Gary Ryan.

They integrated the ensemble required for the “Folk Songs” cycle, by the famous composer Luciano Berio, adapting the harp part for guitar duo (several guitars with different tunings were employed in this performance).

It is also worth mentioning the collaboration of the duo in interdisciplinary projects, namely with poetry and theater, playing original compositions and improvised music with alternative / electronic instrumentation. There were multiple presentations in cultural events, with declamation of texts, and Paulo Alves Pereira staging  from the play “Gladiadores”, by Alfredo Cortez, was premiered with live music.

In 2019,  Duo Arsis members will join the Master in Chamber Music.
