Conference: The Guitar in Brazil – From Marginality to Academy

It would be very difficult to disassociate Brazilian music and the guitar: from “street” music to the greatest composers of classical music, the guitar has an unshakable presence. But this has not always been so.

At this conference, from a historical perspective, it’s proposed an analysis of the position occupied by the guitar throughout the 20th century in Brazilian music: from accompanist to soloist, from a marginalized to a academic instrument.

Through the knowledge of repertoire, musicians, composers and main genres present in this trajectory, we understand a little more on the construction of this Brazilian identity to the guitar, result of the confluence of as varied influences as those of the country that embraces it as a national symbol.
